Salt from three directions

La Jolla is vertical. So is the damage.

Seven miles of coast, ocean on three sides, and Mount Soledad rising 823 feet behind it. Where your grill sits changes everything.

Two homes four minutes apart can sit in completely different climates here.

La Jolla is surrounded by water on three sides and backed by Mount Soledad, which tops out at 823 feet. Between the bluff at Windansea and an estate lot in the Muirlands there is barely two miles of road and an entire change of weather — the hillside neighborhoods often sit above the marine layer while the coast below stays in fog until noon.

Stainless keeps score on that difference. A bluff-top built-in takes spray and salt every single day with nothing in the way. The same grill on Soledad's slope sees a fraction of it. Both need service; they need it on completely different clocks, and treating them the same is how one of them gets neglected.

Elevation is the cheapest rust protection there is.

Three setups we're built for

Three La Jolla setups. Three different needs.

La Jolla grills run from Village balconies to Muirlands kitchens. Here's how membership maps.

Member · 012 visits / year

The Village Balcony

Compact grill, shared deck, ocean air with nowhere to hide.

A compact grill on a Village balcony or courtyard, a few blocks above the Cove. Constant salt, limited space, and building rules to work around. Essential fits: two deep services a year, plus an access plan we sort out once and keep on file.

The Windansea Bluff Built-In

Built-in above the break, exposed on every side.

A built-in on the bluff above Windansea, taking wind and spray with no shelter at all. The harshest exposure in the community. Reserve fits: quarterly service and the protectant program, which is the only thing that meaningfully slows the rust.

The Muirlands Kitchen

Full outdoor kitchen on the slope, above the fog.

A full outdoor kitchen on a Muirlands estate lot — grill, side burner, pizza oven, refrigeration. Above the marine layer most mornings, so less salt and far more cooking. Estate fits: every eight weeks across every appliance, with a condition report on each.

A great deal. Homes above the marine layer on Soledad's slope see a fraction of the salt that bluff homes take daily. Same community, different corrosion clock — and it's the main thing that decides whether we recommend twice a year or quarterly.
